Discovering Aphrodisias We were the first visitors to arrive at Aphrodisias on a fine morning. Now is a good time to mention the beautiful weather we had had so far on the trip. I can't be sure that Rick planned that, but I felt really lucky. The sunny days and clear skies helped heighten our experiences.

Mert was our guide for this tour and explained that excavation had been going on only since the early 1960s. Before that, this city had been almost completely covered. My first thought - how hard it would have been to carry away tons of soil and debris. I hadn't considered that aspect of being an archaeologist. To imagine clearing out just the theater is mind-boggling! |
These are some of my favorite photos from our time in Aphrodisias. While we'd already seen ancient buildings and artifacts on our trip, this site gave me the sense of a complete city full of people and once teeming with life. |

Terry, Melanie, and Wan Lin are sitting on the 'famous' bench that led to the excavation of Aphrodisias. In the 1950s, a Turkish professor visiting the small town noticed the residents using ancient sculptures (in the case of the bench, a sarcophagus) for everyday items. He quickly realized what must lie below all the soil....

We finished our visit to Aphrodisias just in time - several large student field trips were arriving! A quick drive down the road brought us to our lunch destination.

This place had the best hummus and fresh bread that I've ever tasted!

Our entertainer was constantly being nibbled by his friendly parrot.

We arrive in Kusadasi We were all excited to arrive in Kusadasi. It's situated along a beautiful coast and it was going to be a base for the next two nights. All our hotel rooms had a gorgeous view!!

Since we had the afternoon and evening free, Fred and I decided to walk and explore. We ended up having dinner at one of the many cafes on the waterfront.
I was enamored with the view of Kusadasi from our room's balcony and spent way too much time taking photos! Here's a view in the morning and a view in the evening. My choice? I like them both!
